The best container gardening plants for me are those that require the least amount of attention, are rather care-free and are easy to grow. I also prefer flowers that bloom all season and don't require dead-heading. Since I live in Eastern Pennsylvania (Mid-Atlantic, Zone 6) and have lots of outdoor living areas that get part-sun/shade, my favorite carefree flowers are Impatiens. These annuals thrive so well in my location that they occasionally seed themselves into the ground around the containers and come up on their own the following year. I also have nice results with Creeping Jenny as a trailing, vibrant, colorful plant for contrast. Depending on your zone, this plant can be used as a perennial groundcover too.
